Department of Sociology
The teaching of Sociology began in the college when it was offered as a subject to students of B.A. (Pass) Course. The B.A. (Honours) Programme in Sociology began in 1987, with Dr. Usha Panini as the first teacher-in-charge of the department. Dr. Panini retired in 2006, after rendering many years of distinguished service to the department and the college. Since then, the department has grown to a faculty strength of five, with three associate professors and two assistant professors.
The Department has been excelling both on the academic and co-curricular fronts, consistently securing several University positions since its inception.
Sociology Association:
The departmental co-curricular activities are conducted by the Sociology Association. The student office-bearers of the association are elected each year by the student body, who function under the guidance of a faculty member.
Each year, the Sociology Association organizes the Annual Lecture in Sociology delivered by a distinguished scholar in the field, several guest lectures, and the popular inter-college Sociology Festival 'Conscience Collective'.
Department Library:
The department holds the distinction of providing the facility of a departmental library to its students, right from the time of its inception in 1987.
Department Wall Magazine:
An integral part of departmental activity is the Sociology Wall Magazine, posted outside the department room. The wall magazine has been offering over several years, a vibrant platform for wit, humour, deliberation, debate and opinion relating to various issues both academic as well as relating to contemporary social life.
