Achievements

The success of a Department at Undergraduate level is judged by whether the pass outs from the department, got admission in prestigious institutions for Post Graduate study in India and Abroad. The partial list of students who passed out recently from the department and got admission in prestigious institutes in India and Abroad is given below. This is an achievement of the Students and Teachers as well.

2010-2011

  • The Department has launched a New Webpage which aims to provide up to date information about the activities of the Department for effective use by the stake holders i.e. students, alumni, parents, researchers and general public. Important information about our Achievements, B.A (Honours) Economics Course Details, Distinguished Visitors, Faculty, International Academic & Cultural Exchange, International Undergraduate Economics Students Summit (BlissPoint- 2010), Conferences/Lectures/Seminars/Workshops/ etc is posted on almost real time basis.

  • The Department has conducted the first ever National Seminar on "Public Policy and Delivery in Post Reform India: Challenges a Head" during 20th to 21st September, 2010 as part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College (2010-2011). Dr. Mihir Shah (Member, Planning Commission) has been the Chief Guest, who has delivered the Inaugural Speech on "Developmental Strategy for Maoist Affected Districts". Prof K. L. Krishna (Honorary Professor, Delhi School of Economics) has been the Guest of Honour.

  • The Economics Society has conducted International Undergraduate Economics Students Summit (BlissPoint- 2010) during 21st -22nd September, 2010. Student Delegates from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Russia have participated in the event followed by Cultural Exchange Programme with the student delegates from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Russia. BLISSPOINT has been inaugurated by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement. Shri. Salman Khurshid, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Minority Affairs has been the Guest of Honour.

  • Two faculty members and six students have visited Sherubtse College of Royal University of Bhutan for Academic & Cultural Exchange during 26th September to 3rd October, 2010. The programme has been financially supported by Indo-Bhutan Foundation.

  • Two faculty members and four students visited South Eastern University, Voluvil, Sri Lanka for Academic & Cultural Exchange during 19th April to 21st April 2011.

  • Ms. Jayati Khurana has published an article (February- March 2011 issue) titled "State Debt and Corrective Fiscal Measures by Thirteenth Finance Commission in Prudence- the E- communiqué of Committee on Public Finance and Government Accounting of ICAI, New Delhi.

  • Ms. Hemantika Verma (B.A. (H) Final Year) has participated as a delegate in Local Governance Panel in the Harvard Project for Asia and International Relations Conference , 2011 at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
  • Ms. Cheistha Kochhar (B.A (H) Economics -III) has been awarded the prestigious J N TATA Scholarship for the academic year 2011-12 to study Post Graduation in abroad.


Achievements to Continue

2009-2010

  • The Economics Society has conducted the first ever International Undergraduate Economics Students Summit ((BlissPoint- 2009) of University of Delhi) in October 2009. Prof. B.L. Pandit of Delhi School of Economics has delivered the Inaugural Address. Smt. Madhu Bhaduri, a former Indian Ambassador has been the Chief Guest and Mr Palitha Ganegoda, the acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Student delegates from Lahore University of Management Sciences- Pakistan, Sabaramugawa University- Sri Lanka, Independent University- Bangladesh, Sherubtse College- Bhutan and Pedjadjaran University- West Java, Indonesia have participated. Dignitaries from universities of national repute from across the nation, such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, Jai Hind (Mumbai), St. Josephs (Bangalore), Loyola College (Chennai), St. Xavier's (Ahmedabad), Maharani College (Jaipur), BVS (Secunderabad), Scottish Church College (West Bengal) and NLS (Bangalore) actively participated in the Summit. We have had wide scale participation from Colleges of Delhi University and others in the NCR of Delhi.

  • A Panel Discussion on "Inclusive Growth and Environment" was organised as part of BlissPoint- 2009. Dr Reetika Khera of Right to Food Campaign shed light on the NREGA Act. Dr. Deepa Sankar from World Bank; Mr. Abhijeet Das from UNCTAD; Dr. K. Vijayalakshmi, Vice President -Development Alternatives,  Mr Koushik Chatterjee, Associate Vice President -HCL Info systems and Mr. D .A. I. Dayaratne,  Dean Faculty of Management Studies SUSL, Sri Lanka addressed the gathering on various  themes ranging from environmental sustainability to MDGs.

  • Two faculty members and six students of the Department have visited Sabaragamuwa University, Sri Lanka for academic & Cultural Exchange from 11th to 18th of June 2010. Indo-Sri Lanka Foundation has financially supported the programme.

  • Dr. Meeta K Mehra (CITD) of JNU conducted a workshop on 'Trade and Environment'.


2008-2009

  • Mr. D. Brahma Reddy, Lecturer of Economics has been selected for the post of Deputy Director, Thirteenth Finance Commission, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He has contributed significantly to the work of the Commission (Refer Page No. 20 of Thirteenth Finance Commission Report) during his stint from May 2008 to December 2009.

  • Prof. Amit Bhaduri has delivered a distinguished lecture on 'Impact of Globalization on Indian Economy'.

  • The Department began a workshop series titled 'Fabrica' The Department conducted two workshops one on 'WTO and India' by Prof. Amit Shovon Ray,  CITD,  JNU and the other on 'Introductory Game Theory' by Prof. Anirban Kar of Delhi School of Economics.

  • The Economics Society has conducted National Undergraduate Economics Students Summit in November 2008. Dr. Isher Judge Ahluwalia, Chairperson- ICRIER has been the Chief Guest.

  • Priyanka Bajaj and Priyvrat Mamgain have been selected for the prestigious RBI Young Scholar Award Scheme through a National level competitive test conducted by RBI. They have worked as Interns in RBI Regional Offices on Important Economic and Financial Market related issues in summer 2009.

  • Abhimanyu Julania has been selected for Commonwealth Scholarship for the academic year 2009-2010 to study Economics at Post graduate level in UK.

2007-2008

  • Shri Kiran Karnik delivered a distinguished lecture in the beginning of academic year 2007-08 on "IT"s All About Development" followed by Dr. Parthasarathi Shome on "Fiscal Policy and Regional Development". Dr. C. Rangarajan has delivered a distinguished lecture on "India's External Account Management in 90s" followed by Dr. David C. Mulford on "U.S-INDIA Economic Relations in the third academic term of 2007-08.

  • The Economics Society has conducted National Undergraduate Economics Students Summit in November 2007. Dr. M. Govinda Rao, Director-NIPFP and Member- EAC to PM has been the Chief Guest.

2006-2007

  • The Department has begun Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Shankar N. Acharya has delivered the inaugural lecture on "Macroeconomic Policy Challenges for India". This was followed by Dr. M. Govinda Rao on "Tax System Reforms in India: The Centre-State Dimension.

  • The Economics Society has conducted the National Undergraduate Economics Students Summit (BlissPoint- 2006)) from 28th to 30th November, 2006. Prof. Deepak Nayyar, Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi has been the Chief Guest.

  • A Panel Discussion on "Comprehensive Energy Policy for India" has been conducted as part of BlissPoint 2006. Dr. Kirit S. Parikh (Member, Planning Commission) has delivered the key note lecture and chaired the panel discussion.

2005-2006

  • The Economics Society has conducted the first ever National Undergraduate Economics Students Summit ((BlissPoint- 2005) of University of Delhi) in November 2005. Dr. Ashok K Lahiri- Chief Economic Advisor to Government of India has been the Chief Guest.

  • The Economics Society has launched it's maiden Annual Magazine ECON Expressions in BlissPoint- 2005
