A Brief History of
The Department of Physics
The Department of Physics in Sri Venkateswara College was established in the year 1973 with just two teachers Dr. Surya Prakash Tewari and Dr. V. Brahmaji Rao, one senior lab assistant Mr. S. V. Ramana Murty and one attendant Mr. Sunder Singh. The department was set up essentially to teach additional physics in the B.Sc. General Group B course. Gradually the department started growing and in the year 1984 the college started the B.Sc. (General) Group A with Electronics specialization course which was to be mainly run by the department of physics. The enormous success of this course led the college to start the B.Sc. (Honours) Electronics course in the year 1987 and the physics department which had to run this course was quite aptly renamed by the college as the Department of Physics & Electronics. With the initiation of this course the physics and the electronics laboratories of the department acquired very good quality and high standard experimental apparatus and highly sensitive testing and measuring devices. All this was accomplished by the department with the pioneering efforts of the then Principal of the college Dr. V. Krishnamoorthy.

Welcome to Department of Physics
in All India Civil Services examination after completing his Master's in physics from Delhi University and is currently serving the country as a top bureaucrat. The department feels extremely proud to have produced over the years many a student like him. And the department would again here like to place on its proud record of the glorious achievements, the invaluable guidance of the charismatic Principal Dr. A. Sankara Reddy, Dr. Krishnamoorthy's illustrious successor.
Considering the enormous range of both physics and electronics as independent entities and the challenges accompanying them, the college in the year 2000 only thought it wise to separate the two disciplines as two separate departments, namely, the Department of Physics and the Department of Electronics. And the two departments have been functioning independently ever since.
The department of physics ever since its inception has always given immense importance to research besides regular teaching that is done by its faculty. The department takes utmost care to give its students exposure to the latest research in physics that is being done in the country. Every year the department arranges for its students educational trips to various research centres all over the country to acquaint them with the latest research activities and to inspire in them a love of knowledge and to instil in them a passion for physics. Besides, the teachers in the department have been quite regularly bringing to the college many research projects from various funding bodies like the UGC, DST etc, and have been enabling the students of the department to participate in various research activities thus providing them with a high class research exposure at the undergraduate level itself. In fact at present the department of physics can well boast of having the maximum number of major research projects in the college (4 in number, presumably more than any other college level physics department in the entire university) with a total funding of over Rs. 70 Lakhs. At present the department has an exclusive physics research lab where teachers, students and research scholars work together throughout the year to produce world class research output. The department is further planning to expand its research domain by developing a Synthesis Lab where good quality material science research can be carried out in future. And all this has been possible, it must be acknowledged, only with the kind help and guidance of Dr. P. Hemalatha Reddy the present principal holding aloft the ideals of her predecessors.
The department also realizes the significance of information and communication technology (ICT) in the present age and thus has over the years given utmost importance to it by creating its infrastructure and thus using it commonly in imparting education to the students. In the absence of a computer science department in the college, it has been primarily the physics department along with the statistics department that have been managing the ICT in the college very efficiently.
The untiring effort of the laboratory staff and the high standards of teaching in the department have over the years attracted students from all over the country to seek admission to the B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics course and other courses that are run by the department. And with the blessings of Lord Venkateswara, the laurels that the students of the department have been bringing continuously to the college makes the department feel extremely proud of itself. And it would be quite befitting to conclude this brief profile of it by mentioning the names of those who have had the rare distinction to be employed by it as well as those who are fortunate to be currently in its employment.
In the year 1992 Delhi University offered to replace the then existing B.Sc. General Group A course in the college with B.Sc. (Honours) Physics. The department of physics warmly welcomed this offer and B.Sc. (Honours) Physics became instantly a part and parcel of its curriculum. Subsequently in the year 1993 the B.Sc. (Honours) Physics course got restructured as the Integrated B.Sc. (Honours) Physics programme. The high standards of teaching and the use of first-rate and latest experimental set-ups enabled the students to grasp the basic underlying principles of physics. And this was amply visible with the students attaining first ranks in the University. For instance, a student hailing from the north-east region of the country, one Mr. Deepak C. Singh of the first batch of the Integrated B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics programme topped the entire
University and set an example for his juniors to follow. Mr. Singh further secured a high rank
